I briefly looked into the idea of connection to help drive my initial design decisions. When discussing the concept, we talked about KNEX and Meccano (kids toys) which seemed to spark inspiration in terms of aesthetics. 

Joe found this project which we felt could be an interesting starting point for creating a 'connected' design solution.
