 DESIGN PUBLICATION  FINAL OUTCOME |

Unfortunately due to poor time management, I did not get round to actually printing and making this into a physical publication. I was really annoyed by this as I was looking forward to seeing the final product -

Adrian Shaughnessy

Again not someone who I see directly as an inspiration but my COP was based on things he has said - most of which I agree with. I have read quite a few of his books and I admire his no bullshit attitude towards design.

"By turning design into branding, we've allowed creativity to pass into their control. By abandoning its mystique for the dull science of branding, we've lost the one incalculable gift we can give out clients - the rebel yell of genuine creative vision."

"The simple reality is that, in most cases, marketing leads and design follows. Marketing that hires designers to put flesh on their plans and schemes, result in design that is generally subordinate, where as it should be an equal partner."

"As branding is increasingly seen as little more than hype and spin, and part of the coercion industry, design becomes tarnished in the eyes of users and practitioners alike."

"We cannot claim to have a monopoly of virtue. But we can claim to have a tradition of honesty and integrity that we can relieve if we chose to remember graphic design is about the way a company presents itself truthfully and not the way it would like to be seen."

"There is an important role for designers in the creation of honest, functional and clear depiction of any venture's public facing image, but when that becomes confused with the creation of what the brand gurus call brand values, problems ensue."

Paul Rand

I read Paul Rand quite a lot during COP and his thoughts towards/about design. Although I don't see Paul Rand directly as an inspiration, i do find a lot of what he has said really inspiring and relevant to my practice.

I have decided to collect the quotes that mean something to me:

"Good design adds value of some kind, gives meaning, and, not incidentally, can be sheer pleasure to behold: it respects the views sensibility and rewards the entrepreneur."

"The roots of graphic design lie in aesthetics: painting, drawing and architecture, while those of business and market research are in demo-graphics and statistics: aesthetics and business are traditionally incompatible disciplines."

"I just like things that are playful; I like things that are happy; I like things that will make the client smile."

"I always steered towards humorous things. People who don't have a sense of humour really have serious problems."

"Ideas are fuel for the imagination. They are the unique response to a meaningful question."

"The role of the imagination is to create new meanings and discover that, even if obvious, seem to escape detection. Imagination begins with intuition, not intellect."

 DESIGN PUBLICATION  FORMAT/AESTHETIC RESEARCH |

Absolutely love the idea of making something like this - a little personal hand-printed zine with a printed paper bag to put it in. I think zines are definitely something I have overlooked throughout my duration on the course - they appeal to me so much but I have never got round to making one - mainly because I do not have a lot of confidence with editorial work and layout, but I suppose a zine kind of gives you an excuse not to worry about that so much.

I think the idea of printing the entire thing by hand is slightly impossible in the time scale that I have to do, not to mention it would probably need photography in it and this would be difficult to print and ruin the aesthetic, but I would still like to consider it.

Looking more into existing zine designs that appeal to me -

Also really like the idea of creating a zine but then developing the concept further with posters - other printed ephemera.

- Concertina style booklet could be interesting?

- Concertina thing that could fold out into a poster?

- Newspaper style publication?

Aesthetics -

Love the aesthetic and playful layouts for 99U Quarterly Magazine - maybe a bit too neat and clean for me I don't know. i do feel having a consistent colour theme throughout would make it easier to design  -
